FACE-LIFTING” Your Home for a Fresh New Look
Sprucing up your home can happen at any time of the year, but with Minnesota’s cold months and more hours spent indoors, now is a good time to make some changes. You can start with simple color changes, new accessories, sleek storage ideas, or new furniture or window treatments and breathe some new life into a tired old space!
Here are a few ideas guaranteed to “uplift” any tired room:
- Accumulation Elimination – Clear out the clutter! Would your home benefit from some closet or pantry organizers? Are your current storage spaces maximized? The key to storage is not only the ease of access, but the ease of returning items to their designated places – “A place for everything, and everything in its place”.
Create spaces to store things you don’t want to see every day. Versatile and adaptable storage units can be created with decorative woven or fabric baskets, shelving units with drawers and doors, pantry organizers, and storage ottomans to fit your home’s specific needs.
- Rearrange Your Artwork, Displayed Photos, & Collections –Change out your artwork for the season. You do not have to display all your artwork all the time! Put different pieces on your walls or your shelves throughout the year to create interest and a fresh look. Create a gallery wall of your family photos and special memory pieces. Centralize your collections into one space for a dramatic look.
- Refresh Your Accessories – Change out a lamp or even just the lamp shade. Add lighting to a dark corner. Add accent pillows in bright colors and patterns, coordinating fluffy throws, and colorful decorative vases to pull the colors of your room together. Maybe an interesting sculpture or some botanicals is needed to create a desired aura for your room. Would an area rug warm up the room and connect furniture into conversational areas?
- Start Your Own Decorating Notebook – If a whole new look is in the future for a room or rooms in your home, plan now! Save pictures of rooms you really like – what are your favorite things, preferred colors, style of décor. By including personalized notes in your Decorating Notebook, you’ll not only save yourself valuable time, but your design professional will be thrilled with the thought you’ve given to your project!
Your home should be your retreat where you can take refuge to seek clarity, relax, and do life with family and friends. As your neighborhood designer, I am happy to help you with a “facelift” or a full redesign of your spaces to help you retreat in your home!

Holiday Décor Ideas for Every Home
By Julie Disselkamp, Interior Designer/Decorator
Decorating Den Interiors by JT, Inc.
It is my pleasure to serve the areas of Woodbury and Cottage Grove as your neighborhood designer and decorator. I have lived in Minnesota for three years, an “implant” from Sioux Falls, SD, and have been a designer and decorator all of my life while I served many years as an educator. I want this article to get you thinking about Holiday décor. The holidays will be here before we know it, so start your engines!
As a child, I couldn’t wait to bring out the boxes of ornaments and decorative things that would fill the house with seasonal joy. Fondly, I remember the shiny tinsel as we tediously added one string at a time to the aromatic tree. Arranging tabletops and displays with traditional trimmings was so fun to do with my mom and sisters. Preparing for holiday gatherings is half of the fun as we create lifelong memories for the people most important to us.
Festive Fruits, Vegetables, & Nuts
Put “green” in your holiday decorating by using nature’s bounty decoratively! Adding cloves to oranges, lemons, and limes will create a beautiful and fragrant pomander. Stack colorful fruit like limes, lemons, and oranges in a tall glass hurricane to make an impressive statement. Display gold and silver spray-painted walnuts in the shell and gourds in a decorative basket. Fill a large crystal bowl with red and green apples, sprinkled with cranberry twigs. Make a basket or wreath arrangement filled with pine cones, evergreen sprigs, cinnamon sticks, nuts, limes, and lemons. Your local grocery store can provide you many essentials for the accents you need.
Chic Table Tops
Setting a beautiful table can set the mood for all your holiday entertaining. Decorate your wine glasses with bows or miniature bulbs, place gold tassels around your napkins, and add garland, holly, or metallic ribbon to your chandeliers. If miniature pumpkins are included in your table décor, they can also accent a dinner setting if the top and center of the pumpkin is carved out and used as mini-vases for appropriately scaled flowers. Or, you can make the opening large enough to accommodate votive candles. For Christmas, the same concept works equally well with artichokes. When you use coordinating shades of chargers under you china, you’ll add a dramatic finish. Pull it all together with a table runner that ties the color theme together.
Glowing Candles Everywhere
If one pair of candlesticks on your fireplace mantle is good, then collections are even better! If you collect crystal, for example, pull together a grouping in all sizes and shapes, old and new. Add candles of varying heights and use glass beads or small hobby store stones to hold them in place. Nothing softens a room more than the soft glow of candlelight. From tall and tapered to short and stout, candles set a celebratory tone. As the seasons change, just change the colors of candles! Do not be afraid to mix and match the style of your candles. An eclectic collection invariably says something about your personal style making your decorating scheme more memorable.
Mirrors, silver and gold ornaments, picture frames, decorative boxes, and candles make your rooms shine. Mixing metals is stunning and adds visual interest. Nothing says “Holidays” like the twinkle of hundreds of tiny lights in any number of colors to match your color theme. Whether they are added to small or large plants or draped inside silver or gold netting or garland wrapped around your staircase or outlining your doorway, adding sparkly items will always accentuate you holiday décor.
